Call your dentist to let them know what\u2019s happened, and they\u2019ll schedule an appointment for you. Once you arrive, they\u2019ll examine you to identify the problem and suggest suitable treatments. Issue #1: TMJ Disorder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Your temporomandibular joints, or TMJ, are located beneath your ears and anchor your jaw to your skull. These joints are cushioned by a soft cartilage disk that acts as a cushion between the bones and the joint, so it moves smoothly in all directions (up and down, side to side, and forward and back). If the joints and muscles around this disc are overworked or misaligned, they can become painfully inflamed and lead to a stiff or locked jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may not require a same-day emergency appointment, but you should be seen sooner rather than later to address your discomfort before your condition worsens. You may need a nightguard or some other solution, based on your individual situation.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issue #2: Injured Tooth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Brushing and flossing your teeth twice daily prevents cavities and gum disease, but there\u2019s no guarantee that you will never have a dental emergency. For instance, if you\u2019re an athlete or participate in close contact sports, you could take a blow to the face that cracks or chips a tooth. Unfortunately, once the structure is compromised, bacteria can penetrate your enamel more easily, leading to infection. If the sensitive nerves inside your tooth are hurting, that side of your jaw can also ache.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully, your dentist can treat it with a root canal that clears out the diseased materials to protect and preserve your smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Issue #3: Ear Infection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Did you know an ear infection can also present with a throbbing jaw? The Eustachian tube of your middle ear can become painfully inflamed if bacteria make their way inside. As fluids build up, the added pressure causes discomfort that can spread to your jaw and leave it tender or sore.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your dentist confirms that an ear infection is the culprit, they can either treat it by prescribing antibiotics. Otherwise, they might refer you to a doctor who is better suited to assist, like your primary care physician or a special ear, nose, or throat doctor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
